We choose the Spanish holiday resort of Gijon as our base to explore the Asturias region and ultimately the Picos de Europa Mountains.  It is a beautiful area with some breath-taking views to enjoy, particularly on a motorbike.

Northern Spain is a breeze to get to by overnight ferry from Plymouth to Santander.  Turn right out of the port and from there you can travel two to three thousand miles along the coast until you are within sight of the Portuguese border.

This is a favourite holiday area for the Spanish, who prefer the cooler climate. We arrived in mid-August, at the start of the Asturias festival period, and there was a fantastic carnival atmosphere with live music and gallons of the local speciality - cider - to consume.

The Picos Mountains rise to a height of 8,690 ft, which is about double the height of the UK’s highest peak.  The northern Spanish coastline has very similar weather conditions to the southern coastline of England, so the riding wasn’t too hot, but the sun shone all week.

There were hundreds of miles of quiet, open roads to explore.  We also made the odd off-road excursion to visit some beautiful sleepy Spanish villages - Potes being our favourite, with lovely authentic cobbled streets and a river running through it.

In total we covered nearly 2,000 miles on our trip. If you enjoy beautiful coastal and mountain scenery and want to take in the authentic Spanish lifestyle, then Northern Spain is well worth a visit. If motorbikes aren’t for you, it is also be a fantastic area for mountain biking and walking.

We shall definitely return, just as soon as I’ve brushed up on my Spanish.....
